On 15 June, the exhibition “Art Behind Bars”, featuring works by Belarusian political prisoners, will open in Daugavpils at the cultural space New East (18. Novembra Street 41A). The opening event begins at 16:30, and attendance is free of charge.
The exhibition presents drawings and graphic works from the collection of the Human Rights Centre “Viasna” – pieces created by individuals imprisoned for opposing the political regime in Belarus. It is more than just works of art. They are the expression of inner freedom or people held behind prison bars. They are a reminder of justice and human dignity, and a chance for voices silenced by the authoritarian regime in Belarus to be heard.
Previously, the exhibition was showcased in Riga, at the Grand Hall of the Saeima building at Jēkaba Street 11. Opening of the exhibition in Riga on 9 May was attended by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, leader of the Belarusian democratic movement, and Heléne Björklund, President of the Nordic Council.
The exhibition is organised by the Latvian Belarusian association “Supolka” in cooperation with the Human Rights Centre “Viasna”, with support from the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia.
The exhibition will be open to the public free of charge until 14 July at the premises of New East.
